Indians lose season opening series

The Marion baseball team knew they would have their hands full on opening day against their conference rival Central DeWitt Sabers. Unfortunately for the Indians, they couldn't get things going on Monday night as they suffered a pair of 7-2 losses to fall to 0-2 on the season.

The Marion softball team is 1-1 after Monday's season opening doubleheader against Central DeWitt. The Indians and Sabers split to open up their 2020 WaMaC slate of games.


Baseball, softball practices underway

Schools around the state of Iowa were chomping at the bit Monday to get out and practice baseball and softball. Teammates and coaches congregated to their respective facilities to practice summer sports while following the guidelines put in place to still encourage good health practices in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19.


Fans allowed in grandstands for racing

After weeks of local racing fans being forced to stream their racing action on various streaming platforms, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced that race tracks around the state of Iowa are allowed to let fans sit in the grandstands of their events. The capacity is limited to just 50 percent of seating but this is a huge breakthrough for speedways all over the state.


Different rules to follow at Linn-Mar's summer sports this year

The Linn-Mar Community School District, in conjunction with guidance from the Department of Education, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), and the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC), have come up with a plan for Summer Sports 2020. Practices for all teams, at all levels, will begin on Monday, June 1. Games will begin the week of June 15.


Marion racers back in action

The state of Iowa is known throughout the world for having some of the most exciting local racing out there. Often referred to as "The Dirt Track Capital of the World", throughout the summer you can find racing action almost every night of the week. The state also features one asphalt track that races on a weekly basis: Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids. The race track started up their season this past Saturday as well as the Benton County Speedway in Vinton. Several Marion residents took to the tracks to do what they love over the weekend and for Jason Doyle, he walked away with a smile and a little bit of satisfaction.


Play Ball! Governor oks summer sports

June 1 can't get here any sooner for high school students around the Hawkeye State. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced last week that she was giving the go ahead to the IAHSAA and IGHSAU to have the 2020 baseball and softball seasons take place should they choose to do so. Both the IAHSAA and IGHSAU had meetings to discuss whether or not they should move forward and both parties decided they were going to have a 2020 baseball and softball season.


K-8 summer athletic camps canceled

All Linn-Mar Athletic Camps for kids in grades kindergarten through eighth grade have been canceled for this summer. At this time, all ninth through 12th grade high school athletic camps are still scheduled as planned.


Linn-Mar Booster Club approves $120,000 for 20-21

The Linn-Mar Booster Club recently approved a budget of $120,000 for the upcoming 2020-21 school year. This budget funds extracurricular activities involving Academics, Arts and Athletics.


Chmelicek to be an Eagle

Linn-Mar senior Molly Chmelicek recently announced her intentions to continue her career as a student-athlete. Chmelicek took to Twitter to announce she would be turning in her red and black for blue and white, becoming a Kirkwood Community College Eagle as a member of their women's basketball team.


Neff, Hooker recognized

Marion seniors Kennedy Neff and Delanie Hooker did not get the send off that they wanted for their final year of prep golf. Members of the Marion girls golf team their entire high school career, Neff and Hooker's senior seasons were wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has halted the sports world in the United States and across the globe.


Marion girls tennis team reflect on things

Things were just about to get fun. The anticipation was mounting, but was set to end with the start of the 2020 tennis season for the Marion Indian girls. Coach Andrea Hansen's team had strong numbers, including 13 seniors. The COVID-19 pandemic had other plans, but that was not going to stop Hansen and assistant coach Garrette Williams from recognizing this year's team and sharing memories on their time as Indian tennis players.


Marion's Wright named Top 100 Prospect

Marion senior-to-be Riley Wright was recognized by ESPN.com and their HoopGurlz rankings. The prominent sports network recently released their annual rankings of high school girls basketball prospects around the nation for the classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023.


Atkins talks COVID-19 affecting sports

Rick Atkins is in the history books as one of the best to ever do it on the ball diamond at Marion High School. An ace pitcher for the Indians throughout his career, Atkins made the leap to the next level and kicked off his freshman year as a South Dakota State University Jackrabbit. Like thousands of others across the nation, his year was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic and he took the time to reflect and provide some insight on his feelings with the Marion Times.


Iowa Governor's Scholars named

The Iowa High School Athletic Association, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds plus her office and Iowa Farm Bureau recently collaborated to honor some of the top academic achieving senior student-athletes from across the state of Iowa for the 2020 Governor's Scholar Program. The Marion Indians and the Linn-Mar Lions were both well represented as each school had two honorees.
