Linn-Mar projects financial impact of COVID-19 on school's budget

Linn-Mar's chief financial officer J. T. Anderson presented his projections of the financial impact COVID-19 will have on the 2019-2020 budget at their school board meeting on Monday, June 8. While it is too late in the fiscal year for school state aid payments to be impacted (Anderson anticipates a surplus of $200,000), the 2021 budget will likely have a deficit between $500,000 to $1.5 million.
Marion Heritage Center & Museum is reopening

The Marion Heritage Center will reopen June 17 for the limited business hours of Wednesday through Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m., by reservation only. Groups will be limited to 10, and then only if the participants are in regular contact with each other already.
MISD seeks to renew Instructional Support Levy at 10 percent

Marion Independent School District will be seeking a 10 percent Instructional Support Levy, said Marion Independent's business manager Christie Van Wey at the June 8 school board meeting. The levy comes out of both income surtax and property taxes, and is vital to the budget. It has brought in over $4.2 million of revenue into the district over the last five years.
Building permits up over 2019 in the City of Marion

One of the few things the novel coronavirus has positively impacted is the number of building permits in the City of Marion, reports Gary Hanson, building official. Eliminating the requests related to the hail damage, the numbers are still up by more than 300 permits compared to the same time last year.
Improvements to three major intersections approved

The City of Marion is planning improvements to three major intersections this year. The city will work on the intersections of South 31st Street and Highway 100; of Alburnett Road and Echo Hill; and of Seventh Avenue and 35th Street this construction season.

Estol R. "Jip" Fleming, 89, of Marion, passed away on Saturday, April 25, at The Views Senior Living in Marion. Per state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having services for the public at this time. A private family service, officiated by Pastor Mike Morgan, will be held with burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion is assisting the family.
Harold Edwin Crutchley, 92

Harold Edwin Crutchley, 92, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 22, at Linn Manor Care Center in Marion. Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time. A private family graveside service will be held at Blodgett Cemetery in Central City. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.

Indians lose season opening series

The Marion baseball team knew they would have their hands full on opening day against their conference rival Central DeWitt Sabers. Unfortunately for the Indians, they couldn't get things going on Monday night as they suffered a pair of 7-2 losses to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Teammates and coaches congregated to their respective facilities to practice summer sports while following the guidelines put in place to still encourage good health practices in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Fans allowed in grandstands for racing

After weeks of local racing fans being forced to stream their racing action on various streaming platforms, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced that race tracks around the state of Iowa are allowed to let fans sit in the grandstands of their events. The capacity is limited to just 50 percent of seating but this is a huge breakthrough for speedways all over the state.
Different rules to follow at Linn-Mar's summer sports this year

The Linn-Mar Community School District, in conjunction with guidance from the Department of Education, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), and the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC), have come up with a plan for Summer Sports 2020. Practices for all teams, at all levels, will begin on Monday, June 1. Games will begin the week of June 15.
