Indians, Lions set for postseason play
by Brandon Leonard [email protected] · February 20th, 2020

The regular season has concluded for Iowa high school girls basketball teams around the state while the boys teams are just wrapping up as teams prepare for a run to Wells Fargo Arena. Postseason pairings are finalized so the Marion Indian and Linn-Mar Lion teams know what they've got to do to get to the State Tournament.

As far as the Marion girls basketball team goes, they are certainly one of the favorites to win Class 4A for the second time in three years but they have got to get there first. The undefeated WAMAC Champions will open up against either the Washington Demons or the Newton Cardinals Saturday, Feb. 22, at home. The bottom side of the Class 4A Region 6 bracket features Pella, Oskaloosa and Clear Creek-Amana.

The Marion boys have hit a bit of a rough patch lately, losing three straight after a 15-1 start to the year. They snapped their losing streak last week with a 70-53 victory over Benton Community and have a chance to finish the regular season with a win against Vinton-Shellsburg. That will be their final tuneup before they take on South Tama County Monday, Feb. 24, in the Class 3A playoffs. Charles City, Waverly-Shell Rock, Independence, Center Point-Urbana, Vinton-Shellsburg and Decorah are also in Class 3A Substate 3.

Despite late season turmoil with the exit of Nate Sanderson as head coach, the Linn-Mar girls squad have shown resilience and improvement in the late stretch of the year. They've got a road tilt against Southeast Polk this Saturday with a trip to the Class 5A Region 5 final on the line. Other teams in the bracket include Kennedy, Iowa City West and Valley.

The Lion boys have two regular season games scheduled against Dubuque Senior and Cedar Rapids Washington before they begin Class 4A postseason play on Monday, Feb. 24. Linn-Mar is slated to take on Western Dubuque in the opening round of the Substate 4 bracket. Cedar Falls, Dubuque Hempstead, Clinton and Liberty will join the Lions and Bobcats in Substate 4.
