The tables turned a little bit in 2017, as it was the Marion Indians who carried the town torch to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines for the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament back in February. After a down year for Linn-Mar, the team is poised to get more Lions back to the grandest stage in high school wrestling, while the Indians will look to build off of their recent success.

For the Marion Indians, they'll be looking to replace their workhorses Caleb and Colin Conway. The two were state qualifiers a season ago and made up a vast majority of the wins that the Indians accrued over the last four years. This year, they'll be leaning on sophomore Niyo Gady who is a returning state qualifier. Gady opens the season ranked seventh at 106 pounds in Class 3A and will look to move up the rankings as the season progresses.

Linn-Mar also has a ranked wrestler at 106 pounds, freshman Bryce Parke. Parke, ranked ninth, may be a varsity rookie, but he isn't short of big stage experience, boasting a lot of time at the AAU State and National Tournament level.

At 182 pounds, Linn-Mar junior Jacob Wempen is ready to get back to Wells Fargo Arena after falling short of qualifying a season ago. Wempen enters 2017 ranked third in his weight class and will be looking to make a statement for the 2018 season.

Linn-Mar senior Isaiah Garman is coming off of a stellar football season and will be ranked eighth at 220 pounds entering the season.

Marion will also be relying on guys like Brady Bartz and Zach Cochran as the season approaches, while Linn-Mar will have a lot of battles going on with over 50 active wrestlers to start the season.

Linn-Mar Coach Doug Streicher noted that despite having season-ending shoulder surgery, senior Chayse Schultz has maintained a large role in the team as a vocal leader on the mat and for the Linn-Mar strength program with other wrestlers that are banged up.

Action from across the state will kick off this week.
