Ken Burns' latest critically acclaimed documentary, the Vietnam War, made its debut on PBS this September. If you missed it on TV, check out the DVDs from the library. As the daughter of a Vietnam War combat veteran, I was impressed by Burns' research and interviews. It is an excellent primer and provides in-depth information for those already familiar with the subject.

I recently read Shoot Like a Girl: One Woman's Dramatic Fight in Afghanistan and On the Home Front by Mary Jennings Hager.

"MJ" Hager is a Purple Heart veteran who crusaded for other female armed services members. She is an honest and humble storyteller, and I was struck by her courage and generosity.
