Girls State program returns
by Report submitted · November 9th, 2017

Through participation in a hands-on event called Girls State, patriotism, leadership, self-confidence, and friendships can be fostered by high school girls who will complete their junior year and be 16 years of age by September 15 of the year prior to attending.

The local Marion American Auxiliary Unit 298 sponsored a girl to attend the June 18 through June 23, 2017, event at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The process included contacting the school counselor, filling out a resume, going through the selection process, attending the event, and doing a report back to the unit after attending Girls State.

Congratulations to the representative the Marion American Legion Auxiliary Unit 298 selected. We are proud to have been represented by Megan Kongable of Marion High School. She has reported back with words of appreciation for attending and described a memorable event. Thanks to her for dedicating time to the Girls State experience and learning more about how the political system works.

The Girls State program has been in existence since 1937 and has been a way for many young ladies to learn about the fundamentals of government through an experience that includes rooming with a girl from the other make-believe political party, making campaign speeches, listening to speakers--some of which might be actual elected officials, voting, respecting the flag, and even attending an inaugural event in formal attire. It is designed to simulate the city, county, and state election processes. The process undoubtedly gives attendees a better understanding of the process of the general election.

If you are interested in participating in the 2018 Girls State event to be held at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 17 through June 22, 2018, are presently a girl that will complete your junior year of high school at Linn-Mar High School, Marion High School, or Marion Home School, are 16 by September 15, 2017, you may contact the high school counselor for more guidelines and details. The Marion American Legion Auxiliary Unit 298 will decide how many candidates it will send to the Girls State 2018 event.
