Linn-Mar's Shannon Kelley stayed pretty busy last Saturday at the annual Iowa High School State Swimming and Diving Meets. Kelley, a sophomore, helped the Lions score all 10 of their points in two of her three races which gave the Lions a 25th place finish in the team standings.

Kelley's best performance came in the grueling 500 yard Freestyle where she placed 11th individually with a time of 5:15.80. Kelley also teamed up with Vivian Shepherd, Emma Behrens and Ella Wagner to placed 15th in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:52.06.

Katie Dennis, Behrens, Serena Brizard and Wagner just missed scoring points in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a 17th place finish. The 400 Freestyle relay team of Wagner, Kelley, Brizard and Dennis also placed 17th and just missed points. Behrens placed 23rd in the 100 Butterfly. Wagner placed 24th in the 200 Individual Medley while Dennis also was scored in 24th in the 50 Yard Freestyle. Blair Pladsen and Megan Norris also competed in the Diving portion of the meet and placed 26th and 29th respectively.

When the dust settled, it was Ames who ran away with the Iowa High School State Swimming and Diving Championship. Their 384 points was more than 100 points higher than runner-up Dowling Catholic.

In addition to State, Linn-Mar senior Behrens was recently selected as Co-Swimmer of the Year for the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division.

Behrens was also a second team 200 Medley Relay, 100 Backstroke and 100 Breaststroke selection as well as an honorable mention in the 200 Freestyle Relay after doing battle with the brutal Mississippi Valley Conference competitors. Behrens was also an All-Academic Team selection along with Brianna Bisgard.

Katie Dennis earned first team honors for her efforts in the 50 Freestyle. Vivian Shepherd and Ella Wagner also were second team selections in two events.

Dubuque Wahlert's coaching staff earned Coach of the Year while Alleyna Thomas and Bridget Kircher shared Swimmer of the Year honors with Behrens.
