Veterans, new recruits make up Marion girls soccer team
by Brandon Wellman · March 31st, 2011

Graduations always take their toll on teams, while also opening up the prospect of new talent rising to the top. This year, the Marion girls' soccer team is seeing a bit of both in action.

"We had a big group graduate last year, but we still have a large group of experienced kids returning this season," said Coach Becky Herman.

Some of that returning experience will come from senior forward Kristin Kramer. Kramer set Marion's single-season soccer scoring record last year, claiming 25 goals in the season's first 14 games. She scored five times alone in a 10-0 rout of Vinton-Shellsburg last May.

Other seniors on the Indian squad include mid/forward Ashley Kupka, defender Alissa Kupka and mid/defender Jasmine Grindeland.

"We have some freshman talent that looks promising as well," Herman said. "We look forward to having a successful season."

The team takes to the pitch to start the season on Tues., April 5, at the Metro Jamboree at Kingston Stadium, before facing Maquoketa at home on Fri., April 8. After that comes an away fixture against Dewitt on Tues., April 12, and another at home on Fri., April 15, versus West Delaware.
